What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is extremely distressing. Unfortunately, most adults will experience a dental emergency at some point in their lifetime.
At Levitas Dental Clinic, we class a dental emergency as anything that causes you extreme pain or which causes bleeding to your teeth or gums.
We offer emergency dental appointments in both our Guildford and Mayfair, London clinics. We treat patients throughout Farnborough, East Horsley, Farnham and throughout Surrey and London.
These are common dental emergencies we can help you with:

How to get a dental emergency appointment?
At Levitas Dental Clinic, we always try to see dental emergencies as soon as we can. If you are suffering a dental emergency, then contact us as soon as you can. If you are feeling unwell then ask a friend or family member to make the call as soon as possible.

What should I do in a dental emergency?
It is best to contact us as soon as possible in order to book an appointment for your dental emergency. In the meantime you can follow this advice for the most common dental emergencies:
A chipped tooth
If you suffer a severe chip or fracture to your tooth, then you may need an emergency filling or crown. Take paracetamol for any pain you are experiencing and try swilling your mouth in salt water which can help ease the pain too. The emergency dentist should be able to file down any uneven edges and replace missing parts with a tooth-coloured filling.
A knocked-out tooth
This is distressing but try to stay calm as time is critical in being able to save a knocked-out tooth. Be sure to call us as soon as possible. If you can find your knocked-out tooth, keep it safe either in your mouth or in a cup of cold milk to stop it from drying out and bring it with you to see the emergency dentist. Only handle the knocked-out tooth by the crown and not by the tooth root. Take paracetamol for any pain you may have.
Painful swelling
Any swelling around your teeth, gums or face should not be ignored. It could be caused by an infection or a dental abscess which is an infection that leads to a buildup of pus in the tooth, gum or jaw.
You may experience pain, swelling or inflammation in your mouth. Take paracetamol for any pain, stay upright, do not lie flat and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any oral health problem that requires prompt treatment to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, treat an infection or save a tooth. This may include a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, a broken tooth, swelling, a dental abscess or trauma to the mouth. If you’re unsure whether your problem is an emergency, contact our team for advice.
Can I get a same-day emergency dental appointment?
Yes. We always aim to offer same-day emergency appointments whenever possible. If you are experiencing dental pain or have suffered an injury to your teeth or gums, contact us as early as possible so we can arrange the earliest available appointment.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
If an adult tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown (the visible part of the tooth) rather than the root. If it’s dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline solution. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket or store it in milk and contact us immediately. The sooner you receive treatment, the greater the chance of saving the tooth.
Is a severe toothache a dental emergency?
Yes. A persistent or severe toothache may be a sign of decay, infection or damage to the tooth. It’s important not to ignore the pain, as delaying treatment could make the problem worse. Contact us as soon as possible to arrange an emergency assessment.
What should I do if I chip or break a tooth?
Rinse your mouth with warm water and, if there is swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your face. If you can, keep any broken pieces of the tooth and bring them to your appointment. Contact our clinic promptly so we can assess the damage and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
Can I book an emergency appointment if I'm not a registered patient?
Yes. We welcome both existing and new patients who require urgent dental care. If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, contact our team and we’ll do our best to arrange an appointment as quickly as possible.
What happens during an emergency dental appointment?
Your dentist will examine the affected area, discuss your symptoms and, if required, take X-rays to identify the cause of the problem. The immediate priority is to relieve pain, manage any infection and stabilise the tooth or surrounding tissues. Any further treatment options will be explained before proceeding.
How much does an emergency dental appointment cost?
The cost of an emergency appointment depends on the assessment and any treatment that may be required. We’ll always explain the fees clearly before carrying out any treatment, so you know exactly what to expect.
What should I do if I lose a filling, crown or bridge?
If a filling, crown or bridge becomes loose or falls out, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth and keep the restoration if possible. Contact us as soon as you can to arrange an appointment. Prompt treatment can help prevent further damage and discomfort.
When should I go to A&E instead of seeing a dentist?
You should attend your nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) department if you have severe facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, or swelling that is affecting your airway. For most dental emergencies, including toothache, broken teeth, lost fillings and dental abscesses, contact our dental team first for urgent advice and treatment.
