What is Root Canal Treatment and Why Might You Need It?
A root canal may be needed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes irreversibly inflamed or infected. This can happen for a few reasons, such as deep decay, a cracked or broken tooth, or dental trauma. In many cases, patients experience pain or sensitivity, but sometimes the damage is found during a routine checkup.
If left untreated, the infection can spread and lead to more serious complications, including abscesses or tooth loss. Root canal treatment is designed to clean out the infection, seal the tooth, and preserve it for the long term.
What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is typically carried out over two appointments.
This is what the process involves:
- Your dentist will begin by numbing the area, ensuring the treatment is completely pain-free.
- A small opening is made to access the canals inside the tooth.
- The infected or inflamed pulp is carefully removed, and the canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected.
- Once the canals are fully prepared, they are filled with a natural rubber-like material to seal them.
- Finally, the tooth is restore, often with a filling or crown, depending on its condition and location in the mouth.
Please note that root canal treatment is only available at our Levitas Dental Clinic in Guildford.
Recovery and Aftercare
After treatment, it’s normal to feel some mild tenderness for a few days, but this usually settles quickly. Your dentist will advise you on how to care for the tooth in the days following the procedure and schedule any necessary follow-up.
At Levitas, we are committed to making your treatment as comfortable, precise, and stress-free as possible. Our clinicians use advanced technology, including digital imaging and enhanced magnification, to ensure every step is performed with accuracy and care.
We take the time to explain your options clearly, and if you are feeling anxious, we offer sedation options to help you feel at ease. With experienced general and specialist dentists on-site, you are in safe hands from start to finish.
